Cine Europa 11

It's Cine Europa's 11th year here in the Philippines. As usual, the European Union will hold its film fest in EDSA Shangrila. There will a bunch of great European movie that they will showcase. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I am dying to watch some of the films that they have for this year and to top that off, I'll be going to the Cine Europa 11 with a very special person. Anyway, conditions apply, have to meet the sibling first. Hopefully the brother won't beat the hell out of me when I get to meet him.

So if you guys want to catch some European flicks, Cine Europa 11 will start on September 11 and run until September 21 here in Manila. They will then move to Ayala Center Cebu on Septemeber 26 to September 28. They will also go to Liceo de Cagayan de Oro on October 3 to October 5.

Please click here for the screening schedule.

I'll be going there on the last day, September 21st. Here's the possible films that I would watch.

Chemical Hunger
by Antonio Bocola and Paolo Vari

With a backdrop set in a grim housing project of a Milan suburb teeming with social tension, three youngsters, Claudio, Manuel and Maja, face up to the passage from youth to adulthood.

Urban poverty, workers’ rights, and racial conflicts between Italians and Third World extracomunitari (people from outside the European Union) represent one set of related issues; Claudio’s career and romantic uncertainties and interactions with his more illegal pal Manuel are another. Italian rapper, Zulù, leader of the "99 Posse," comments on the social situation in songs he sings like a Greek chorus.

One Hundred Steps
by Marco Tullio Giordana

"I cento passi" (one hundred steps) was the distance between the Impastato’s house and the house of Tano Badalamenti, an important Mafia boss, in the small Sicilian town of Cinisi. The movie is the story of Peppino Impastato, a young left-wing activist that in the late seventies (when almost nobody dared to speak about Mafia, and several politicians maintained that Mafia did not even exist) repeatedly denounced Badalamenti crimes and the whole Mafia system using a small local radio station, with the arm of irony. In 1978 Peppino (30 years old) was killed by an explosion. The police archived the case as an accident or a suicide, but his friends never accepted this thesis.

Night Run
by Dana Nechustan

Dennis van der Horst is a kind-hearted young entrepreneur. He lives by the rules of the street. The only people he feels any responsibility for are his brother Marco and his family, who are not very well off. When Dennis gets the chance to obtain an extremely expensive but lucrative taxi-license, he seizes it. In the presence of the manager of MOTAX, the only taxi company in Amsterdam, Dennis borrows a very large sum of money. Dennis is beside himself with joy. The hustling is over. Soon however Dennis finds out that there was a reason why it was so easy for him to obtain such a scarce license. The law is being altered, allowing competition on the taxi market. The licenses of Dennis and many of his colleagues all at once become worthless. As of that moment there is a war going on in the streets of Amsterdam. Dennis gets deeper into trouble when he finds out that he has unwittingly become part of the criminal organization behind MOTAX. Even the police turn out to have secret ties with MOTAX and there is only one thing left for Dennis to do in order to free himself: confront the man who is pulling the strings.

Colorado Avenue
by Claes Olsson

Colorado Avenue tells the story of Hanna, a young woman who emigrates to America determined to make money in the Great West and later returns to her home country to face civil war, alcohol smuggling and humiliation. With her American dollars she buys a parcel of rocky land and opens a country store. The store becomes the village centre and the local people begin to respect the industrious Hanna - or Dollar-Hanna as they choose to call her. The film deals with humiliation, shame, respect and making peace with one’s past and is set in the early years of Finland’s independence.

I'm so excited about this film fest. hihi...

Journalerz: Zambales Edition

Disclaimer: This is a relatively long entry about the out of town trip I had with some college friends. If you don't like reading long entries. Better not read this at all. I'll be editing this entry once I get home and I will be placing some pics here as well so that it would not be a sea of gray.

I was having second thoughts of going with my college friends in Zambales since it's a bit too rainy to go to the beach. We've been planning for it for almost a month since our friend Abbie went home from Shawarma Land for a vacation here in the Philippines. I didn't want to spoil Abbie's stay so when I woke up at around 5 in the morning last September 13, I told myself, "Hey, you deserve a break! Go up north and be with your friends!". The hell with the rain, but at the back of my head I was hoping that we'll just have a great time and nothing bad should happen. Since my bag is already packed, I texted George that I'm good to go and I'll just meet 'em up at the Victory Liner bus terminal in Caloocan. So I ate breakfast, had a few pandesal and off to the bathroom, took a bath and got dressed up.

I walked towards the village gate to catch a bus to Monumento, thank God it didn't take that for a bus to arrive. I hopped in off to snoozeland again. I arrived at the terminal a little pass 8 in the morning. They were there already having breakfast at the carinderia. So while waiting for the 9am bus to Zambales, we chat a little and took some pics. A little before 9am, we hopped in the bus and guess what, Upper and I are left no choice but to sit in the same row. I think the other guys are crazy, why let to fat people sit together in a single row? But in any case, we're still thin, we're not cramped up in the bus. Upper went to snoozeland right away. This is probably the longest bus ride I have ever been to. I am excited so I didn't care that much.

After like an hour, we reached Lubao, Pampanga's bus stop wherein we are able to get off the bus and stretch our legs and arms a bit. We grabbed something to eat again. I light up a stick of ciggy to kill time. And after like 15 minutes, we took off and headed straight to Zambales. The bus ride took around three or four hours I think. We passed through several towns including Olongapo and Subic Town. I have no idea they were two different towns. But anyway, we arrived at San Antonio, Zambales around noon time. The city looked like a ghost town, it's a quite town and you would never see that much people walking around even in the town proper.

We took a trike from San Antonio town proper to  Brgy, Pundaquit wherein Megan's Beach Resort is located. Megan's beach resort isn't too fancy, it's just a normal beach resort with rooms. We were originally planning to camp out at Anawangin Cove but then, my idea of getting a room at a beach resort won since the weather isn't that good. So we talked to the caretaker and asked what type of room they have available. The caretaker offered two options, a 1600php room and 1800php room. We asked what the difference is, 1800php room is boasting a hot shower and CATV. So, we decided to get 1800php because of the hot shower and CATV, and by the way, it's also an air conditioned room. Not bad if you ask me. When we got in to our respective room, room 6 and 7, we tried to turn on the television set but there's nothing to watch, just a blue screen which looks to me like a chroma board. So, we thought maybe they haven't activated it yet. We then decided to take a walk outside the resort and look for a place to eat since we haven't had lunch. We found this small carinderia and they have some food. We ordered Pork Sinigang (weird because they used porkchop). So we pigged out as usual.

We then went back to our room and changed to our beach outfit. Off we go to the beach. The waves are crazy, it's indeed a surfer's paradise. There's a lot of surfer dudes around which makes me want to try it out, well, someday. When I'm a bit slimmer.

We walked towards the far left side of beach and to my surprise, there's a freaking river that we have to cross to be able to go the far end of the beach. So we did, the current in the river mouth is crazy, it's so hard to cross it and I am thankful that I have strong leg muscles. After the struggle in the river's mouth, I sat in the shore and I saw this really really hot surfer chick with a really really cool tattoo on her upper and lower back. She's my "flavor of the day" that day. I took some paparazzi shot of this chick. After that, I decided hit the sea and join my friends there. Strong waves keeps pounding us in rapid succession which is fun and dangerous at the same time. After a while, we got a bit tired and we all sat at the shore. And again, we took photos of each other.

After a few while of resting, we walked towards the far end of the beach wherein there are some springs. There's another stream that leads to the sea. After a while, it rained but it didn't stop us from having fun. That's what we are, we're all about having fun. We then took pictures, of course, we're all a bunch of camera addicts.

After a crazy half day at the beach, we went back to the resort to get some rest. We had a simple dinner at the resort, blue marlin and rice. Then we bought a few bottles of booze and had a little drinking session at the boys' room. The ambiance of Pundaquit will make you think it's already around 1 or 2 in the morning but in fact, it's just 10pm. We called it a night at around 11pm I think.

The next day, George and Kate woke up and ask if we can go to the islands, and thank God, the waves is a bit behaved. So off we go. We went to Capones Island wherein we aren't really convinced that it is Capones Island since we were not able to see the lighthouse (I read about it when we got home, it is indeed Capones Island, so we really have to go back there because I will take pictures of the lighthouse, aight guys?!). Capones Island is a really cool place, when the boat docked at the shore we were like, is this the beach?! Is this really the beach?! We didn't know that we have to go to other side of the island to see a better view. We had to trek through the grass land and it is kind of itchy. Not the type of grass I like, if you know what I mean. But anyway, when we reached the other side of the island, the view is just awesone and the song from Discovery Channel played at the back of my head. Blue ocean, white sand beach... and garbage?! Yeah, you read that right, there's garbage in the shore which probably got washed because of the current. But overall, the beach in Capones Island is really nice, hopefully, they will clean it up.

After Capones Island, we hopped back in to our boats and head to Anawangin Cove, the sea swells are crazy, they are probably around 5-10 feet high. It's more like Rio Grande Rapids. I got wet. Really really wet. But it was fun and exciting, and again, dangerous. After like 20 or 30 minutes, we got to Anawangin Cove, well, not really Anawangin Cove since the boat needs to drop us off at the other side Anawangin Cove since the wave in Anawangin Cove is crazy. The boatman told us that we can get to Anawangin Cove but we had to get over the hill between the beach we are in and Anawangin Cove. I was telling my friends not to do it but they insist. I was telling that that they are will really regret it once we are on our way back because I know for a fact that it is easy to climb a hill but it is always hard to go down a hill. But in any case, we pushed through with the trek.

We climbed this rock face which I think is around a hundred feet high. It's pretty steep as well. One wrong step, you're dead. We managed to climb the rock face and the view from the top of the hill is breath taking, the view of Anwangin Cove is crazy. The adventure did not stop there though, we still have to go down the hill. The hill is kinda muddy and slippery since it just rained. We had to be really really careful with every step. After what seems to be forever, we are able to reach Anawangin Cove, but due to the rain or probably the storm Marce, a portion of the beach front of Anawangin Cove is washed off, and the Anawangin Swamp and the sea itself is no connected and you have to cross what seems like a river flowing to the sea. Badge, almost got wiped out by the current, thanks to the people who's in the other side, they were able to save Badge from being wiped out completely. After crossing, we went for a swim in the swamp (not in the beach itself because it's dangerous.). It rained hard the wind is crazy, the sand from the beach is all over the place and when  the sand hit your skin, it's more like somebody is firing BB pellets at you. We kind of freaked out, well, I did, I was thinking about the gut feeling I had the day before we left for Zambales. I was having a gut feeling that something will go wrong with the trip, I thought we will be stranded in Anawangin Cove. Which can't be because I have work the next day.

So, while waiting for the rain to stop, we popped our cans and ate tuna and sausage. The hell with the sand in the air, the hell with the sea water. We're hungry! We also met people from Chevron who happened to be there in Anawangin Cove as well. We left the place together with the Chevron peeps. We took a different trail this time, a much easier trail. We got back to our boats and rushed back to Pundaquit.

We didn't eat lunch, we took a bath and prepared to leave for Manila. We left Megan's Beach Resort a little before 4pm. We waited for the bus in the highway, we took an ordinary bus to Olongapo since we will be taking the aircon bus there. We got to Olongapo at around 5pm. We ate lunch, err, dinner at Chowking. After that, we're off to the Victory Liner terminal in Olongapo and head home. We got to Cubao at around 9pm. We parted ways there. I still had to take another bus to Pacita.

It was tiring but it's fun! A lot of fun and it's also dangerous! Just like what Ramon Bautista always say.

Jeng Jeng!

I met up with Kat at EDSA Shangrila because we are suppose to watch Cine Europa. Unfortunately, I was late for almost half an hour. Had to cook lunch for my mom, that's why. They ran out of tickets for the 2:30 show, the next show will be at 4:00 so if we'll watch the 4:00pm screening, Kat will be late for her band rehearsal. So we just opted to go to Starbuck's. I had my usual cappucino and Kat, doing her mind conditioning just ordered sausage roll and bottled water. She's trying to trim down her weight which is weird because there is no way in hell that she is even fat. But in any case, it's a girl thing to always say they need to cut down their weight even if they are not even fat at all.

I then gave her a white Holga 120GCFN. She seems to like it, she named her new camera "Yasap" which I think is named after me. Am I conceited? Well, Kat told me Yasap is more like Joseph, which is basically my first name. Tought her how to load the film in her new Holga, which I think she needs to get use to. It took me a few rolls before I mastered the art of loading 120 films in my Holga.

While we were at Starbuck's, Kat and I played with our Holgas. It's been ages since I last used mine so I loaded it up and took a few shots. I also played around with Demi, Kat's Nikon D40. I am really drooling over Kat's prime lens. So Kat, if you are reading this, we can swap lens for a week, you can use my 210mm. Haha!

After Starbuck's, we walked around the mall a bit. We were planning to go to Time Zone, Kat, what happened, why didn't we go there? You said you want to play that punching game, right? But in anycase, it was fun. Kat never fails to make me laugh whenever she makes face. After strolling around the mall, we decided to head for the MRT station since she's got a band rehearsal at 6:30.

While on queue in MRT ticket booth, Kat did something to the girl in front of her. She just have to remove the loose hair from the girl's shirt. I was surprised. OC. Haha. It was funny.

While waiting for the train, we saw some advertisements and me, being a broadjourn student before and Kat being a media prodution student, we can't help but notice the weird things about the advertisements normal people would not notice. I guess Kat and I are abnormal. Kat even noticed the image of the reflector in the eye of the model. Kat sees things in vivid details which is really cool.

We got into the train, well, after like 3 jampacked trains. She got to seat and I was standing. It's been ages since I last took the MRT to go from point A to point B. I love the MRT, used to ride it a lot when I was having my OJT at this ancient network somewhere in Tandang Sora. As usual, Kat would make face, which is really cute and funny at the same time. I took a video of her while she is making face but unfortunately, she deleted the video when I showed it to her. She deleted the video because she thinks she looks stupid, well, not really, it's just funny Kat...

When I got to seat beside her, she asked me what "jeng jeng!" is. I was trying to think of a song because I was thinking that she's refering to an intro of a song or something. Then she went like, guitar! "jeng jeng!" is the sound of the guitar. I was so damn slow but it gave me a good laugh. She caught me off guard with that joke. Corny as it may seem but Kat delivered the joke well. Haha.

We got off at the Taft Station of MRT. We saw another billboard and again, she noticed something about it again. Haha. Well anyway, it was the best MRT ride I ever had in ages. I always ride the MRT alone that's why I don't have any cool MRT story.

So we parted way in Taft Avenue since she's heading to SM Bicutan, I walked her towards the jeepney terminal and off she goes. I took the LRT this time since I'll be going to Buendia Avenue to catch a bus to Pacita.

While passing through SLEX, I noticed that there's an explosion of colors in the sky. It's the magic hour, I wanted to take the camera out of my bag and take pictures of it but what I did is that I just texted Kat about it. Haha. The sunset yesterday is crazy, there are parts of the sky that are amber, blue, yellow, red, purple. Crazy sunset!

So that's pretty much about it. JENG JENG!

The Space Between

The Space Between | Dave Matthews Band

You cannot quit me so quickly
There's no hope in you for me
No corner you could squeeze me
But I got all the time for you, love

The Space Between
The tears we cry
Is the laughter keeps us coming back for more
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep safe from the pain

But will I hold you again?
These fickle, fuddled words confuse me
Like 'Will it rain today?'
Waste the hours with talking, talking
These twisted games we're playing

We're strange allies
With warring hearts
What wild-eyed beast you be
The Space Between
The wicked lies we tell
And hope to keep safe from the pain

Will I hold you again?
Will I hold...

Look at us spinning out in
The madness of a roller coaster
You know you went off like a devil
In a church in the middle of a crowded room
All we can do, my love
Is hope we don't take this ship down

The Space Between
Where you're smiling high
Is where you'll find me if I get to go
The Space Between
The bullets in our firefight
Is where I'll be hiding, waiting for you
The rain that falls
Splash in your heart
Ran like sadness down the window into...
The Space Between
Our wicked lies
Is where we hope to keep safe from pain

Take my hand
'Cause we're walking out of here
Oh, right out of here
Love is all we need here

The Space Between
What's wrong and right
Is where you'll find me hiding, waiting for you
The Space Between
Your heart and mine
Is the space we'll fill with time
The Space Between...

*I heard this song over the radio while I'm on my way to work today. For some strange reason, it hit me, HEAD ON! Damn Mo Twister! Well anyway, great song. Just feeling a bit emo today.

Vertigo: Sounds like headache

Damn work!

It's a bit flattering that I am one of those who were picked for for the "Vertigo Team". It's more like a specialized team of technical support specialist. I am actually at the office while composing this entry and I am really sleepy since the management changed my schedule for this training. I usually go to work at 8 in the morning and for today, I went to the office at 7 in the evening.

The training for "Vertigo" is relatively light. It's not that hard. It's just that there are some confusion since there is a product wherein I am really not good at. Even my fellow "Vertigo" agents aren't good at it. We usually transfer it to a different department since we are not well trained for it. I suck at e-commerce. Well anyway, I am keeping my fingers crossed and I am wishfully thinking that there would still be a different support number for that dreaded product.

After having our meal break, we went back to the training room and our fear was confirmed. We will be changing our schedule. I had to bid good bye to my weekend restdays. My new restday will be Tuesday and Wednesdays. To all my drinking buddies, to all my lomo friends, to my weekend chillax at home, good bye. I won't be seeing you guys for a long time. Well, unless you guys want to drink on a Monday or Tuesday night.

So now, this just came in, we were told that our VDN has already been changed and we are now dedicated to take "Vertigo" calls. Damn, we just ended our freaking training. Since we are bumming around, I guess we will be assigned some processing stuff. Oh well, sucks big time.

The Man Who Can't Be Moved | That's Me!

The Scripts | The Man Who Can't Be Moved

Going back to the corner where I first saw you,
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag. I'm not gonna move,
Got some words on cardboard got your picture in my hand,
Saying if you see this girl can you tell her where I am,
Some try to hand me money they don't understand,
I'm not... broke I'm just a broken hearted man,
I know it makes no sense, but what else can I do,
How can I move on when I've been in love with you...

Cos if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me,
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I can be,
Thinking maybe you'd come back here to the place that we'd meet,
And you'd see me waiting for you on the corner of the street.

So I'm not moving...
I'm not moving.

Policeman says son you can't stay here,
I said there's someone I'm waiting for if it's a day, a month, a year,
Gotta stand my ground even if it rains or snows,
If she changes her mind this is the first place she will go.

I'm not moving...
I'm not moving.

People talk about the guy
Whos waiting on a girl...
Oohoohwoo
There are no holes in his shoes
But a big hole in his world...
Hmmmm

Maybe I'll get famous as man who can't be moved,
And maybe you won't mean to but you'll see me on the news,
And you'll come running to the corner...
Cos you'll know it's just for you

I'm the man who can't be moved
I'm the man who can't be moved...

Cos if one day you wake up and find that you're missing me,
And your heart starts to wonder where on this earth I can be,
Thinking maybe you'd come back here to the place that we'd meet,
And you'd see me waiting for you on the corner of the street.
[Repeat in background]

So I'm not moving...
I'm not moving.

I'm not moving...
I'm not moving.

Going back to the corner where I first saw you,
Gonna camp in my sleeping bag not I'm not gonna move.
* This song is playing at the back of my head for days now. Same goes with "The Space Between". I'll compile a soundtrack of my life soon. Haha... Oh well...
