Last night, a friend asked me about cameras, digital SLRs to be exact. He wanted to buy himself a decent digital SLR but I think he is in a tight budget. He told me that his budget is about 30ish. I gave him a simple formula, a formula I invented.
Canon = Expensive Body + Cheaper Lens + Local Canon Service Center
Nikon = Cheaper Body (D40/x, D60) + Expensive Lens + CDSC for the Service Center (Not really Nikon, just an authorized third party service center)

Personally, I prefer Nikon but I am so tempted to get a Canon once I have the money to buy myself a DSLR. Not that I will be getting rid of my film cameras, it's just for the sake of practicality. I cannot go and shoot using my film cameras all the time, it's getting too expensive but still, it's worth it. Alright, back to what I am saying, I am tempted to get a Canon instead of a Nikon is because the lenses are cheaper and it is easier to find one.
Ok, so this might start another never ending debate on which brand is better. Canon or Nikon? Honestly, I think Nikon and Canon is great, but I just have to say this, Hasselblad is better! But come on, the camera and the megapixel everybody is raving about, it doesn't mean a thing when it comes to photography. I always hear and read about this quote and it goes like this, "It's the Indian, not the pana.". For those people who wants to buy a camera, specifically the DSLR, here's my suggestion as to what you need to consider before buying one.
1. The brand does not matter.
2. The number of pixels does not matter unless you will be printing your photos on a tarpaulin that will be placed along EDSA.
3. Create a list of the cameras that you are interested in buying. Go to a shop and feel them in your hands. Get a good grip of it. You need to put the size of your hands into consideration. You don't want a huge camera if your hands is as small as kid's hands. If that's the case, just use a point and shoot. Just kidding!
4. The amount of money in your wallet would/could affect the decision you will make in purchasing a DSLR. So better save up. I have a gut feeling that you won't stop buying stuff for your camera. A kit lens would never be enough. Cameras are like mobile phones, you tend to upgrade all the time.
5. Read the online reviews about the cameras you are considering to buy.
Well, anyway, here are the cameras I AM eyeing on.
Nikon
1. D40 or D40x
2. D60
3. D80
4. D90
Canon
1. 450D
2. 1000D
3. 40D

So that's it, I did not include the extemely expensive ones since I won't be buying one in this lifetime, probably, not even in the after life.
Keep this in mind, "It's the Indian, not the pana".
